Alfred Twu

Alfred Twu for Berkeley Rent Board, 2024

Biography

Alfred is a licensed architect and has worked on affordable housing in Berkeley and nearby cities, and will bring their experience to make sure standards are followed and everyone can enjoy safe, habitable, accessible, and energy-efficient housing. Alfred serves on Berkeley’s Planning Commission where they’ve worked to protect existing apartments from demolition while also encouraging new homes to bring us closer to a jobs-housing balance so that those who work and/or study in Berkeley can live near jobs and school.

In the early 2000s, while a student at Cal, Alfred lived in the Berkeley Student Cooperative, where they also worked as a maintenance manager for one of the houses. Alfred entered politics around housing and transportation issues and helped start both statewide and local organizations including the California Democratic Renters Council, which organizes tenants statewide with the California Democratic Party, as well as East Bay for Everyone, which works on getting more housing built, funding affordable housing, and tenant protections.

In addition to working as an architect, Alfred also runs their own illustration and design business. They have been a tenant in Berkeley since 2002, and have lived in university, nonprofit, and private housing. As the first in their family to grow up in the United States, they guide themselves with the belief that Berkeley’s best days are still ahead of us and that wherever our country needs to go, we will get California there first.
